Tennessee To Retire Allan Houston's Number

Jan 31, 2011 12:54 PM

Tennessee will retire the number of Allan Houston in a pregame ceremony on March 6th when the team hosts Kentucky.

Houston will join Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld as the only Tennessee players to have their number retired.

“Allan represents everything the term ‘student-athlete’ is supposed to represent,” athletics director Mike Hamilton said. “He was a very good student, a campus leader and tremendously successful on the court. We are thrilled to have his number hang in the rafters at Thompson-Boling Arena as a tribute to who he was, and is today.”

Houston wore No. 20 for the Volunteers.

Vols Recognizes Mistakes, Want To Look Ahead

Jan 25, 2011 4:07 PM

Tennessee has recognized their past mistakes and wants to move forward following Saturday's loss to Connecticut.

"We didn't watch any of the UConn footage," reserve guard Josh Bone said. "We knew what we did wrong."

The focus now turns to the SEC schedule, which resumes Wednesday against LSU at home.

"I think we've excelled in some areas, and then we've taken some steps back in areas that we shouldn't be taking steps back in," said junior guard Cameron Tatum.

"To become a good team you've got to continue to excel in many different aspects of the game. Once you get better at one thing, you can't take a step back in another. Some of those things we just haven't been doing a good job of."

Whether with poor defense, turnovers or shooting troubles, the Vols have been up and down all season, winning just five times in 12 games following a 7-0 start.

No Violations Found In Tennessee Player's Bar Visit

Jan 25, 2011 6:21 AM

Tennessee officials say junior forward Renaldo Woolridge did not commit an NCAA violation when he visited a Knoxville bar over the weekend.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported Woolridge received exclusive access to a portion of New Amsterdam Bar and Grill free of charge to film a music video early Sunday morning.

“Renaldo and two other students were scouting a location for a future shoot,” Tennessee spokesman Jimmy Stanton said. “There wasn’t a sign or any security saying it was for private use.”

Vols Get Pearl Back Against UConn

Jan 22, 2011 12:20 PM

Bruce Pearl will return to the sideline for Tennessee on Saturday when they take on Connecticut.

Pearl is serving an eight-game SEC suspension as a result of an ongoing NCAA investigation.

"Coach Jones brought what he called the 'formula for wins,' " junior Scotty Hopson said Friday. "With Coach Pearl, the big thing is he makes sure we always have a sense of urgency, and his voice is heard all the time."

Shay Adjusting To Role As Tennessee's Lead Recruiter

Jan 11, 2011 4:25 PM

Due to the school's recruiting violations, Tennessee assistant Jason Shay has become the team's top recruiter.

Until June 23, Shay is the only Tennessee coach who is allowed to recruit away from campus because of the university’s self-imposed sanctions for NCAA recruiting violations.

“They have to know I’m there,” he said of recruits and their coaches and parents. “I have an orange sweat suit at home. Maybe I can wear that. That’s the one thing about our colors; you know we’re in the building. We stand out.”

Shay's normal job has been to prepare plans for games against Tennessee’s toughest opponents and tutor the Vols’ big men. Shay, who has worked for Pearl for 10 years, has gone from nearly invisible to visible.

“I guess I’m going to need a little swagger, too,” he said. “I better have a shtick like some of these head coaches.”

Pearl Has Trouble Watching Tennessee On TV

Jan 11, 2011 8:04 AM

Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl says watching his team lose to Arkansas on television was "as hard as you could possibly imagine."

Pearl has been suspended for the first eight SEC games by league commissioner Mike Slive after lying to NCAA investigators during an ongoing probe into Tennessee's recruiting practices.

He says he felt helpless and had let his team down as the Vols (10-5, 0-1) missed a chance to tie the game as time expired.

Volunteers associate head coach Tony Jones is filling in for Pearl.

Jones Prepared To Step In For Pearl

Jan 8, 2011 12:58 PM

Tennessee associate head coach Tony Jones is prepared to step in for Bruce Pearl, who is serving an NCAA suspension.

"Of course I'm going to be nervous, but it's going to be a nervous fun, a nervous energy," Jones said.

"It's something I've been doing for 17 years, and once the game starts everything will be fine."

The Volunteers will face Arkansas on Saturday.

Pearl was suspended for the first eight SEC games of the season for lying to NCAA investigators.

"I think we can adapt to both personalities," senior center Brian Williams said. "They've both been here for as long as each other, and they learn from each other. No matter who's our leader, we're willing to learn from them as well."

Pearl: Only Vols Committed To Defense Will Play

Jan 4, 2011 9:36 AM

Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl says he'll only play Volunteers that are committed to playing defense.

Pearl is preparing his team for No. 21 Memphis and the start of SEC play.

The Vols (9-4) have lost four of their last six games because of increasingly poor defense.

"We made it worse on ourselves by losing confidence in ourselves and each other," Pearl said. "You put it all together and you put yourself in a bit of a spin."

Pearl has one game to tweak the rotation himself before he begins serving an eight-game suspension for lying to NCAA investigators during an ongoing probe into recruiting practices by the Tennessee coaching staff.

"It's fixable," Pearl added. "Unfortunately, it's fixable as we start to get into the teeth and some of the more challenging parts of our schedule."
